André Komatsu
André Komatsu, a young Brazilian artist who is half Japanese, works in
collaboration with the Vermelho gallery in São Paulo. He has a
conceptual approach to drawing and construction. The themes introduce
an architectural style that develops the stance of the ready-made by
using construction and destruction with humorous overtones. A series of drawing-works done on discarded wood or stone depict the
original state of the waste material, for instance, a brick will depict
the original architecture from whence it came.
His work plays with the idea of the ready-made, yet he points towards a return to materiality and original history. The significance of using words such as "new" or "finished" on the remains reminds us of the fetishisation of the art object.
As a blog-writer comments on his work, reflecting over the city is a theme that is always fascinating. It is like the song by Caetano Veloso, "Fora da ordem" "Here everything looks like it is still in construction and already is in ruin"
