Juan Tessi
Juan Tessi was one of the first artists to join our collection. Originally from Peru, he lives and works in Buenos Aires. Juan Tessi draws from the visual concerns of Hollywood film. In these graphic, almost violent, stills young victims stare in horror at the camera, silenced and frozen by the paintbrush and canvas. Juan Tessi's works are of fractured beauty; quotations from mass media described in intimate oil portraits whose "models of success play upon their own carnality, torment and social ugliness"
The vulnerability, and fragility of the beautiful models is presented to us as the eternal observer. We feel intruders on their pain, yet we can do nothing within an eternal moment of silence. It is beautiful, yet horrific.
Although he uses imagery from films, Juan Tessi says of his work, "I reinvent my memories, creating an autobiography out of the things that surround me".
