Sarah Grilo

Sarah Grilo, born in 1920, Argentina, had an influence on the emergence of the neo-figurative movement in Buenos Aires. We are keen to build a strong collection of her work. Having formed the group of Modern Artists in Buenos Aires in the 50s, she has worked all around the world, particularly in Spain, France and North America. A rich multiplicity of painting was present in mid-1960s Argentina. The early Informalist style developed through assertion and clarification of positions and led many artists to emigrate to explore their stance elsewhere.

We feel Grilo's style shows traces of a strong painterly tradition based in almost purely abstract forms, and it demonstrates great talent for harmony in colour. Jacqueline Barritz declares, "In her sensitivity of expression and colour Sarah Grilo has achieved a degree of maturity that is rare amongst avant-garde artists"

Dyptich, 1994, was bought from Jorge Mara la Ruche. From the use of numerical and alphabetical clusters and the date we recognize this work to be subsequent to Grilo's NY period. The letters and number are not intended to be symbolic, rather became a part of her visual alphabet as there were large amounts of urban imagery that surrounded her on the streets on New York City.
